In a world of increasingly bad news, we’ve got a story that will instantly brighten your day! An unlikely pair; 31-year-old Chris Salvatore and 89-year-old Norma Cook are the truest friends you’ll ever meet. “She called me the grandson she never had,” Salvatore said of Cook in an interview with the Today Show and from what we can see Norma means it, “He’s really a wonderful guy.”
The odd couple has been friends for the past five years after first sharing good mornings through their kitchen windows of the West Hollywood apartment complex where they both lived. At first, Salvatore and Cook would just sit and trade stories, “She offered me a glass of Champagne — it’s her favorite drink — and we just sat down and talked,” he said. “We connected right away.” But it was soon clear to Chris that their bond was much deeper than polite offerings of friendship.
Not long ago Norma, who suffers from Leukemia, became gravely ill and entered the hospital in a fight for her life battling against pneumonia and respiratory problems. Chris never left her side and supported Norma through it all. Chris even went as far as taking Norma into his home to provide her with the 24-hour care and assistance she needs. “The nurses and doctors told her that it would be a miracle if she lived past the holidays, so the fact that she’s still thriving is just a really great thing,” Salvatore told TODAY. “She’s doing great. If you could see her right now, she looks so cute on the couch with her feet propped up. She just hangs out on my couch and watches TV.”
But why do it we wonder? At 31 and with a budding acting career isn’t there something else Chris Salvatore would rather do with his time? The answer apparently is nothing at all! “Moving her in… it feels as though it was meant to be all along,” he said. “It’s really fulfilling to be there for her.” And Norma appreciates the kindness Chris has shown her and her cat Hermes (who also moved in) “He cooks for me… If he can’t make it as an actor, he can make it as a chef!”
