You never know what small seemingly meaningless act of kindness could change or even save a person’s life. When a teenager from Dublin, Ireland was walking around one day, he never expected to save an older man’s life. Jamie Harrington, the Irish teen, was walking around a store minding his business when he noticed something peculiar out of the corner of his eye. From a distance, Harrington saw a man sitting on the edge of a bridge crying. He then did something that was seemingly simple but changed the course of another man’s life.
The teenager went over to the man to check and see if something was wrong. The first words that Jamie asked the man were, “Are you okay?” Those three basic words continued into a 45-minute conversation. Jamie sat with the man and listened to his problems. Young Jamie then helped the unnamed man check into a hospital and called him an ambulance.
Jamie told Humans of Dublin, “I couldn’t leave him there alone, but I had to go, so I was going to ring an ambulance. I told him they could help him feel better. But he was like “please, please don’t call them, I’m fine, I just want to walk around for a while, I’m gonna be okay!” I told him to please let me ring an ambulance, that I wouldn’t sleep knowing he was just walking around alone. So I rang it, and he was taken to St. James Hospital.”
The two men exchanged phone numbers and a little while later, Jamie heard from him again. The anonymous man called Jamie to say that his girlfriend was pregnant with a baby boy and they decided to name the baby Jamie! He also told Jamie that his question “are you okay” kept circulating in his mind because it was the question that saved his life.
Jamie told the Humans of Dublin Facebook page, “I can’t really understand how these few words could save his life. But he told me, ‘Imagine if nobody ever asked you those words.’”
