A woman from New Jersey has been blown away by the kindness a homeless man showed her when he offered her his last $20 when she ran out of gas, and now hopes to show her gratitude.
Kate McClure, 27, was saved in Philidelphia after visiting her friend last month and found her gas tank had hit “empty.”
While worrying about being stuck on the side of the road, a homeless man, named Jonny, approached her to let her know it was not safe to stop where she had and went to get her gas with the last $20 he had.
McClure made a promise to Johnny. She told him she would return to where her car had run out of gas so she could repay him. McClure certainly kept her word, and she and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, have since raised $395,000 on their GoFundMe page.
The couple set up the page with a $10,000 goal to help the former ammunition technician and managed to go well over their goal in the past month.
Kate wrote her story on the page, hoping that others would be moved by the good deed she experienced by Johnny. She explained – “I never ran out of gas before, and my heart was beating out of my chest.
Johnny saw me pull over and knew something was wrong. He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can. Using his last 20 dollars to make sure I could get home safe.”
“Johnny did not ask me for a dollar,” she continues, “and I couldn’t repay him at that moment because I didn’t have any cash, but I have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks. I repaid him for the gas, gave him a jacket, gloves, a hat, and warm socks, and I give him a few dollars every time I see him.
“I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day. He is such a great guy, and talking to him each time I see him makes me want to help him more and more.”
With hope to help Johnny secure himself an apartment, a vehicle and a normal life overall, Kate hoped others would wish to give Johnny a better life. Insisting “any little bit will help,” Kate’s page is sure to give Johnny that first step in giving Johnny a second chance.
